Hello, TripleTen community! Welcome back to another installment of our job market overview. The first quarter is over, and we are starting Q2 with the month for change, May. Now is as good a time as ever to review and recommit to your job search as you look to pivot into tech. Let’s dig through the current job market numbers and talk about your new best friend for finding a job: TripleTen’s employer report, Breaking into Tech: Employer Secrets for Success.

Labor market review

The job market is maintaining its strong 2024 showing heading into May. The New York Times goes as far as to characterize the market as “bursting,” which sounds great for job seekers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 303,000 new jobs were added in March. This marks the 39th straight month of job growth.

Unemployment has dropped, too, to a rate of 3.8%.

With low layoffs and high numbers of unfilled jobs, opportunities are available. There were over 8.8 million job openings reported at the end of February. The market is hungry for workers. Let’s see how to take advantage of this opportunity.

TripleTen’s employer report

“Be prepared” is more than just a motto from your childhood. Being prepared is one of the keys to success in any part of life, especially your job search. To ensure success, you need to know the questions to ask and the answers that will help you stand out. This is where TripleTen’s employer report comes in.

This get-hired cheat sheet includes responses from over a thousand companies polled by TripleTen. These companies are of all sizes, and they come from across the US and diverse industries, meaning the report gives comprehensive insights into the hiring process and atmosphere for prospective employees.

But what specifically does this survey cover? Good question. Some topics include who they hire, what they look for in candidates, and their 2024 hiring predictions. And it includes much more, such as:

Question: Do you need a traditional background to get into tech?
Answer: No, nearly 80% of employers are already hiring candidates with non-traditional backgrounds.

Question: What are the most important qualities decision makers are looking for in an interview?
Answer: In total, 68% of respondents list hard skills, and 65% list soft skills as must-have skills for candidates. The least important candidate quality is having an undergraduate or master's degree.

Question: How can you stand out in the hiring process?
Answer: Over half of the survey respondents suggest that making a personal pitch, highlighting a robust portfolio, and sending in a polished resume are the best tools for standing out.

Question: What are hiring managers saying about working remotely?
Answer: The office is making a comeback.

These questions and responses should have you feeling good about your job search, but what positions are these companies hiring for? The three most promising positions for pivoting into tech are data analystHow to Become a Data Analyst, web developer, and software engineer.

These in-demand jobs are generally hiring across all industries, but some are especially keen on hiring for these positions. If you’re looking to become a data analyst, transportation is an industry that would be a good fit; 53% of respondents in transportation say they are focused on hiring data analysts.

If you’re looking for a web development role, the design industry wants you. A significant 67% of design industry respondents said they were focused on hiring web developers in 2024. The emphasis on hiring for these positions in these industries is a good indicator of where you may find your first job.

Finally, if you are looking for specific values in a company, the report has insights for you. Does company size play a role in values like gender balance in staffing? The short answer is yes. Download the report (linked here) to discover even more so you can be prepared for your next job in tech.
